Fire Service: Wilderness Medical Technician
Team Medic Qualification
| Course Aim |
To provide the students with essential medical and trauma training to give students the skills and confidence to undertake the medically challenging role of an Expedition Team Medic in a remote environment, where access to medical assistance isn’t readily available.

| Objectives |
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- State the role of the Wildness Medical Team Medic
- Define Scene Safety Management (Safety & Triage)
- Explain and demonstrate principles of infection control
- Summarise Post Incident Procedures
- Demonstrate a Patient Assessment (including Primary & Secondary Survey)
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills with Patients & colleagues
- Recognise respiratory problems in a patient
- Compare and discuss breathing difficulties
- List causes of obstructed airway
- Demonstrate basic and advanced airway management skills (including administration of oxygen)
- Perform Basic Life Support Skills
- Perform Paediatric Basic Life Support
- Demonstrate the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on a casualty who is not breathing
- Identify Normal/Abnormal heart rhythms
- Discuss & Demonstrate various dressings for different types of wounds
- Demonstrate treatment of a casualty in shock
- Discuss & Demonstrate recognition & treatment of casualty’s with a variety of medical conditions e.g. Heart conditions, Asthma etc
- Demonstrate skills and Identify equipment necessary to assist Medical staff e.g. Cannulation, Setting up fluids, IV Access etc
- Identify recognition features of trauma injuries and demonstrate appropriate treatment
- State the importance of Spinal Immobilisation
- Demonstrate Spinal Management Skills (KED, Rescue Boards etc)
- Define the effects of a Chest Injury
- Demonstrate the treatment of Chest Injury
- Advise the Expedition Leader on all medical and health issues surrounding an expedition
- Examine and Discuss procedures for dealing with explosions
- Demonstrate Emergency Extraction Skills
- Examine and Discuss Medical Kits
- Demonstrate skills for working in a Road Traffic Collision
- Discuss the Kinetics of Trauma
- Examine & Discuss procedures for working with Water Based Incidents
- Demonstrate treatment of a casualty effected by environmental factors e.g. hypothermia, heat exhaustion etc
- Examine & Discuss overseas medical issues e.g. Malaria, High Altitude Sickness etc

The Pre Hospital Environment, Triage & Safety, Patient Examination, Basic Life Support, Paediatric Life Support, Haemorrhage Management, Medical Emergencies (Diabetes, Seizures, Anaphylaxis etc), Shock Management, Trauma Emergencies (Head Injuries, Fractures, Dislocations, Burns/Scalds etc), Airway Management, Use of Defibrillation, Medical & Trauma Equipment, Ballistic Trauma, Chest Trauma, Emergency Extraction, Assisting Medical Staff, Environmental Factors, Paediatric emergencies, Road Traffic Collision Management, Kinetics of Trauma, Advising the Expedition Leader, Water Based Incidents, Environmental Factors. |

On successful completion, students are awarded the following awards:

- £500 (ex vat) per person (Open Course)
- £3500 (ex Vat) Group up to 12 (Held at our training centres or the customers training premises)
