Course Outline

The aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to manage medical and trauma incidents in the pre hospital environment.

This extensive 5 day course covers medical and trauma skills in the Pre Hospital environment. It is accredited by City & Guilds and is designed for Emergency & Rescue Services, Close Protection Officers, Private Ambulance Services, First Aid Instructors, Nurses etc.

Students will gain: -

  • a nationally recognised and accredited qualification by City & Guilds
  • the experience of qualified and experienced instructors
  • confidence in managing medical and trauma emergencies

Course Content

  • The Role of the Pre Hospital Emergency Medical Technician
  • Scene Safety Management e.g.triage
  • Infection Control
  • Post Incident Procedures
  • Patient Assessment e.g. primary & secondary survey
  • Communication with patients & colleagues
  • Respiratory problems with a patient
  • Basic & Advanced Airway Management Skills e.g. OP, NP, LMA, Suction & Bag Valve Mask
  • Pediatric Life Support
  • Basic Life Support
  • Automated External Defibrillator
  • Normal/Abnormal Heart Activity
  • Bleeding Management
  • Shock Management
  • Medical Conditions e.g. Heart Conditions, Asthma, Diabetes, Seizures, Stroke
  • Assisting the Paramedic
  • Anaphylaxis Management e.g. use of Epi Pens
  • Spinal Management
  • Spinal Immobilisation e.g. use of Rescue Boards, KED’s, Cervical Collars
  • Injuries to Muscles, Bones and Joints
  • Administration of Medical Gases e.g. oxygen and nitrous oxide
  • Patient Monitoring Skills including Blood Pressure, Temperature, Blood Glucose, Oxygen Saturation
  • Management of head injuries
  • Management of abdominal injuries
  • Burns and Scalds Management
  • Road Traffic Collision Management
  • Ethics

Assessment

The course will be assessed in some or all of the following ways: -

  • Personal development reflective journal
  • Multi choice examination
  • Practical assessments

Certificate

On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded the following certificates:

  • Pre Hospital Emergency Medical Technician (Basic & Intermediate)- City & Guilds Accredited
  • IHCD & Royal College of Surgeons First Person on Scene Intermediate Award
  • HSE First Aid at Work
  • Level 2 Administration of Medical Gases
  • Level 2 Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Additional Course Information

  • Please bring old clothing suitable for a variety of weather conditions as outdoor first aid scenarios are likely to take place
  • Please be aware that outdoor clothing may be stained or damaged during the scenarios
