Pre Hospital Emergency Medical Technician and Medicine in Remote Areas
Course Outline
The aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to manage medical and trauma emergencies and be able to stabilise a casualty in a remote environment until further help can be obtained.
The exciting 7 Day Serpent Medic programme combines the Pre Hospital Emergency Medical Technician (City & Guilds Accredited) and Medicine in Remote Areas- Intermediate and advanced (Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh- Faculty of Pre Hospital Care accredited) courses together, to form a robust and comprehensive programme to develop the skills and knowledge in pre hospital care.
The course covers medical and trauma skills for the Pre Hospital environment and remote care. It is designed for Emergency & Rescue Services, Close Protection Officers, Nurses, Military, Expedition leaders etc.
The course combines a range of teaching and learning methods e.g. realistic scenarios, theory, practical, skill stations, team exercises etc which develop skills progressively and allow students to make decisions on casualties effectively.
Students will gain: -
- an accredited Medicine in Remote Areas (Intermediate & Advanced) qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) - Faculty of Pre Hospital care
- an accredited Pre Hospital Emergency Medical Technician (Basic & Intermediate)
- by the experience of medic's who bring "real world" experience to the classroom
- skills that are relevant to modern developments in pre hospital care and reflect the demands placed upon medics in the field
- enhancement of existing skills

- Basic & Advanced Airway Management Skills e.g. OP, NP, LMA, Suction & Bag Valve Mask
- Pediatric Life Support
- Basic Life Support
- Automated External Defibrillator
- Normal/Abnormal Heart Activity
- Bleeding Management
- Shock Management
- Medical Conditions e.g. Heart Conditions, Asthma, Diabetes, Seizures, Stroke
- Assisting the Paramedic
- Anaphylaxis Management e.g. use of Epi Pens
- Spinal Management
- Spinal Immobilisation e.g. use of Rescue Boards, KED’s, Cervical Collars
- Injuries to Muscles, Bones and Joints
- Administration of Medical Gases e.g. oxygen and nitrous oxide
- Patient Monitoring Skills including Blood Pressure, Temperature, Blood Glucose, Oxygen Saturation
- Management of head injuries
- Management of abdominal injuries
- Burns and Scalds Management
- Road Traffic Collision Management
- Ethics
- Basic to advanced a irway management skills e.g. surgical airways
- Life threatening chest injuries e.g. use of needle chest decompression
- Catastrophic bleeding & blast injuries e.g. pressure points, tourniquets, haemostatic agents, direct and indirect methods of control
- Shock management e.g. administration of fluids, FAST-Sternal intraosseous device and intraosseous bone injection gun
- Improvised vehicle extraction

Assessment
The course will be assessed in some or all of the following ways: -
- Personal reflective journal
- Written exam (multi choice)
- Practical assessments
- Continuous assessment through casualty moulage
Certificate
On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded the following certificates:

Additional Course Information
- Please bring old clothing suitable for a variety of weather conditions as outdoor first aid scenarios are likely to take place
- Please be aware that outdoor clothing may be stained or damaged during the scenarios
